James Jamp: A Journey Through Songwriting and Sound

James Jamp, a British musician and producer based in Madrid, has carved out a unique path in the music world. As a multi-instrumentalist, James takes a deeply personal approach to his solo work, playing and singing nearly every part of his recordings, with the exception of drums. His music blends elements of singer-songwriter, rock, pop, and folk, and each track tells a story drawn from the chapters, moments, and memories of his life.

His musical journey began early, from playing in rock and metal bands in his youth to exploring electronica and bass improvisation with a live jazz collective. After studying music and production at university, James moved into various music projects, his main output, making & DJ'ing bass heavy electronica under the alias, Cogent [http://cogent.bandcamp.com]. In 2013/2014, he launched an acoustic singer songwriter side project. His first tracks gained momentum at open mic sessions and a small festival in the UK, where positive feedback led to more gigs. This gave James the idea to develop his acoustic songs into full-band arrangements.

James relocated to Madrid to complete a music residency in collaboration with the European Commission, where he quickly became immersed in the local music scene. Through collaborations with musicians from around the world, James not only offered his production and recording skills but also found inspiration for his own work. His passion for live performance continued to grow, leading him to perform in Spain, Italy, and the UK. These experiences fuelled his creativity and drive to complete his first solo album, Introspective Tales.

Recorded between the UK and Madrid, the album is a reflection of James’ personal journey, filled with stories from various highs and lows of his life. “Making this album was a process of reflection; revisiting moments of madness, some dark days, and many highs and lows during my former years,” says James. “Completing these songs really helped my healing process and put things into perspective.” His music has served as a diary, helping him close certain chapters of his life and move forward. The album is a blend of rock, pop, and folk, showcasing James’ diverse influences and craftsmanship.

Beyond his solo work, James remains an active performer with other bands. He plays guitar and backing vocals with long-time collaborator Daryl Hockin, and bass with a band called Indigo Days. For James, the chemistry of playing live with other musicians is irreplaceable—a thrill he’s cherished since the beginning of his musical journey.

James also continues to work as a producer, lending his expertise to Madrid-based artists and bands. His experience in production has shaped his own sound and allowed him to grow as a musician. “Working with other artists is like being the extra band member or just doing the technical work, but it’s always an enjoyable process, which can be inspiring and a learning process,” he explains.

Currently, James is working on a new EP. Though the process is slow, especially with his drummer based in the UK, James is focused on getting it right.

For James Jamp, music is more than a career—it’s a lifelong passion, a therapeutic outlet, and an ever-evolving journey of creativity. With Introspective Tales now complete, James is excited to share his stories and music with the world, hoping listeners will find something to connect with in his songs.
