Introducing Ash Grove: A Fusion of Individual Styles and Endless Studio Creativity

Updated: Oct 26, 2024

From a small town in the Costa del Sol, Ash Grove is carving their unique path in the music world by blending diverse influences, studio experimentation, and a laid-back approach to creativity. Formed in mid-2023 by George Oughton (guitar, bass, vocals), Marco Malfario (drums, vocals), and June De Martino (keyboards), this emerging band brings a refreshing twist to the rock genre by focusing on production rather than live performances. Regular collaborators like vocal powerhouse Erika Rickert and trumpet-playing sisters Hannah and Heidi Liptrot add to their ever-evolving sound.

The Ash Grove Sound: “Simple-Sounding Complicated Music”

While Ash Grove may fall under the broad category of rock, their style is constantly shifting, adapting to the musical vision of whoever brings the idea for a song. With each member contributing their unique flair, their collaborative efforts produce something distinctively their own—the Ash Grove sound. As they put it, they create “simple-sounding complicated music,” in the form of subtly intricate arrangements.

The band’s debut song, “Access to the Net,” is a perfect example of their spontaneous creativity. The track came together in just one afternoon, with Marco improvising the lyrics in one take, setting the tone for the band’s fluid, collaborative process.

Building Their Own Space: A Focus on Production

In a town with a limited live music scene, Ash Grove chose to focus on studio production, where they have full creative freedom. What started as a home studio has since evolved into a larger, more sophisticated space where the band can experiment, refine, and create without any time constraints. This self-sufficiency allows them to approach recording with a fresh perspective, using unconventional methods like recording without a metronome to preserve the natural feel of their music.

Their recording process is just as dynamic as their music. One member typically brings a rough idea to the group, which is then developed collaboratively in the studio. With backgrounds in music production, both George and Marco enjoy experimenting with different recording techniques. They start by recording the basics in one continuous take, sometimes all together, sometimes track by track. From there, they layer in additional elements—backing vocals, trumpets, organs, and more—giving each song a rich, textured sound that evolves throughout the process.

Looking Ahead: A Journey Without Pressure

Ash Grove’s focus remains on recording and releasing music, without going into live performances—at least for now. The band is embracing the creative freedom their studio space offers, allowing them to push boundaries and fine-tune their sound in a collaborative environment.

As Ash Grove continues to release new music, their focus is clear: they’re having fun, creating in their own space, and putting out music that’s unmistakably theirs. Keep an eye out for this band as they continue to evolve and make waves in the world of alternative rock.
